How We Keep Our Bengals Happy and Settled
Bengals have a reputation for being a handful after dark. High energy, highly intelligent, and deeply curious, if that energy has nowhere to go, you will know about it at 2am. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Here at Talari Bengals, our cats go to sleep when we do. Every night. That didn’t happen by accident.
The bedtime routine that actually works
Cats are hardwired to hunt. That instinct doesn’t disappear just because they live indoors, it needs an outlet. A good play session that mimics the chase and catch sequence their instincts are wired for, and once that itch is scratched they are ready to eat, rest and sleep.
We play with our cats for around half an hour every night before bed. By the time the lights go out, they are genuinely settled. Our kittens leave us already accustomed to this routine — so when they come home to you, the foundation is already there.
What we actually use
Cat trees and scratching posts are non negotiable, we have them throughout the house and they get used daily. Toys come and go in terms of popularity, but one unexpected hit has been a round tunnel from Kmart with a ball inside. Add a catnip ball and it becomes completely irresistible. Simple, inexpensive and genuinely obsession worthy.
For more serious exercise, we have a Fit n Fun cat wheel. Snowflake treats hers as equal parts lounge chair and treadmill, she is on it every single day. Skadi takes a more athletic approach. And Khaleesi, our show girl, has been known to break into a full sprint on it when she thinks nobody is watching.
Fetch is also worth trying with your Bengal. Snowflake has played since she was young and it remains one of her favourite games. Not every Bengal will take to it, but many do — and it is one of the most rewarding ways to bond and burn energy at the same time.
The best enrichment we never planned for
Honestly? Each other. The thing that keeps our girls most entertained, most active and most content is that they have each other and a whole house to tear through. The sound of paws thundering down the hallway is the unofficial soundtrack of our home — and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Bengals are social, curious and endlessly playful. Give them space, variety, company and a consistent bedtime routine, and life with a Bengal is everything you hoped it would be.
